Life Coaching Case Study: Why is this Move so Hard?

moving-boxA life coaching client “Nathan” was moving back home after many years in another part of the country. The decision was his alone and he was anticipating it with enthusiasm. He could not have been more surprised to find that when the move was completed, the boxes unpacked and the pictures up, he was miserable. Nathan yearned for what he had left behind. Everyday he would think about his previous life. Had he made a huge mistake? Nathan felt stuck, overwhelmed with decisions, and haunted by the choice he had made. He came to me for life transitions coaching.

We started with letting go of the past. Even though Nathan wanted to move, he was not prepared for emotions such as anger, sadness, confusion and fear to overwhelm him. It is common to have such feelings, regardless of how well you have made plans and choices. Relocating is always an upheaval. Letting go of the past and accepting change are the keys to a smoothing those troubled waters and looking forward to something new.

Nathan acknowledged his frustration and his emotional swings. He was ready to leave the past behind and adapt to a life style in a place where he really wanted to live. He was commited to making changes in his attitude and actions. As his coach, I used various skills and tools to examine how he had handled similar situations and how relocating had impacted his personal goals. Nathan was ready to end the wallowing and become productive again. We outlined ways to reconnect with a new community as the first step forward.

Nathan created a plan of action and set a schedule for when he would meet his goals. Accountability helped him and jump-started new energy into his life. We discussed such things as:

  • What will you do about feeling stuck?
  • When will you do it?
  • What will that give you?
  • How will you know you have been successful?
  • What is next?

Over several months Nathan stopped brooding about the past and began to engage in a new life. He recognized his strengths and determined how he could use them to move ahead with purpose. As Nathan took action for himself, his confidence and self-understanding grew.

Yes, there are bumps on the road that can stop forward motion during a change or transition. The value of working with a coach is to recognize what those bumps are all about and to find a plan for a fresh start.

Letting go is the natural release that follows the realization that holding on hurts.
